MBE for Tayside Stroke Nurse

Margaret Mitchell, NHS Tayside Community Nurse and lead of the Stroke Liaison Team has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List for services to healthcare with NHS Tayside.

Margaret, who lives in Forfar, has spent the past four-and-a-half decades in nursing and in recent years has been involved in the care of stroke sufferers in Tayside. She graduated with a BSC (Hons) degree and an MSC in nursing and was the senior charge nurse when the stroke unit at Ninewells was opened.

On receiving the award, Margaret said, “I feel very humble but extremely honoured to be receiving such a prestigious award for doing a job I love. It is quite fitting that the award has been given now as the Stroke Liaison Team is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year.

“Over the past 15 years or so I have been closely involved in caring for stroke patients and I am now acting clinical co-ordinator for brain injury rehabilitation work in Tayside, helping provide ongoing support for stroke survivors.

“I find working with people who have survived strokes inspirational. The results of a stroke can have a devastating effect on a person’s health, but they all show a real determination to recover and get as much normal life back as possible.

“To see them achieve their goal is stunning and to be able to assist them along the difficult road is something which I have found truly an inspiration.”

Margaret will collect her MBE at Buckingham Palace in March with husband Bill and sons Michael and Jonathan.
