The East of Scotland Research Ethics Service (EoSRES) provides advice and support for research and researchers.  In 2008 the Research Ethics Service for Scotland was divided into 4 regions: North, South, East & West.  The Health Boards of NHS Fife, NHS Forth Valley and NHS Tayside form the East of Scotland and known as EoSRES.  Administration support was centralised to NHS Tayside in 2006.

We support 2 NHS Research Ethics Committees (RECs); 2 Sub-Committees and 2 Proportionate Review Committees (PRSC) in addition to providing advice and support to researchers at all stages of their research careers.  EoSRES works closely with the Health Boards’ academic partners the Universities of Abertay, Dundee, Stirling & St. Andrews.

EoSRES provides advice on ‘grey area’ research: clinical audit, service development/evaluation etc.  Advice is given in a formal letter which should satisfy journal editors that the study has undergone ethical consideration; if you decide you wish to publish your results at the end of the study or in the future.  Grey Area enquiries should be made to the Ethics Helpline (ethicshelpline.tayside@nhs.net) and the Scientific Officer will review and advise whether or not your study will require an NHS REC review.
